The most-stolen muscle cars

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

According to the latest data from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) covering model years 2022-24, the Camaro ZL1 has become the most frequently stolen vehicle overall in the U.S. among that sample. CarBuzz+3Claims Journal+3Motor1.com+3

Specifically:

  • The ZL1’s theft rate is about 39 × the average vehicle theft rate for its insured peer group. Motor1.com+2CarBuzz+2

  • The standard Chevrolet Camaro (non-ZL1) is also high, at about 13 × the average. Motor1.com

  • Why so targeted? Thieves exploit vulnerabilities (for example via the OBD-II port), and the high value/performance parts make it attractive. Motor1.com+1

Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

Before the Camaro ZL1 took top spotlight for 2022-24 models, the Charger SRT Hellcat (model years ~2020-22) had been flagged by HLDI as the most stolen muscle car in prior studies. CBS News+2HotCars+2

Key stats:

  • HLDI found theft claims for the Hellcat were more than 60 × the average for all vehicles of those years. CBS News+1

  • It remains highly vulnerable in the muscle-car category due to its high value, high demand parts, and relatively exploitable security. HotCars+1

So, which one is the “most stolen muscle car”?

  • If you look at 2022-2024 model year data, the Camaro ZL1 is the front-runner (most stolen overall across all cars) and hence arguably the most stolen muscle car right now.

  • If you look at the muscle-car category broadly over recent years (especially 2020-22), the Charger SRT Hellcat has the strongest historical claim to that title.

  • The answer depends on timeframe and what you define as “muscle car,” but those two are clearly the top targets.
